Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the 11,000 acre Wintergreen Resort is an ideal four-season escape in Central Virginia. Located just 90 minutes from Richmond, the resort seems suited for adults wanting a respite from the corporate world, for writers seeking a quiet sanctuary to create, or for business people on a corporate retreat. However, Wintergreen Resort also boasts a family-friendly atmosphere and it offers plenty of fun activities for children and adults alike. So we decided to experience the diverse offerings for ourselves and took off on a weekend with three adults and two teenagers.
We were checked into a two-level, four bedroom condo that was spacious and offered a magnificent view. In addition to the space and captivating view, the condo offered a full kitchen, dining room, several balconies, a stone fireplace music system. On top of those goodies, each bedroom had its own private bathroom and flat-screen television. The master bath offered a whirl tub along with a separate shower. With teenagers in tow the separate bathrooms and five televisions throughout were major bonuses.
The resort is extensive so depending on where your condo is located you could walk to a few spots but most times you’ll need to drive or call for the free resort shuttle.
We enjoyed a weekend over the summer months and found that we didn’t have time to enjoy all of the offerings at Wintergreen, but we were able to find some time to golf.
Of course, the kids found their way to the summer tubing run, zip line, arcade house and bundgie cord.
During our time at Wintergreen Resort we enjoyed a family outing to the Archery Range. At the range we were given safety and skills lessons before we took to our bows and arrows. Some of us even perfected our targeting skills and aimed for the resort’s zombies.
Wintergreen Resort has a number of dining options available; from burgers to casual restaurants to upscale. We enjoyed a variety of excellent dishes and Virginia wines. The resort is very supportive of local farmers so our meals were prepared with fresh ingredients. The resort is also supportive of the arts so in the summer guests can enjoy a classical concert by local and nationally known musicians who are often lead by esteemed visiting conductors. The sound of music against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains was magical.
After all of the activities a massage was in order so the adults enjoyed an afternoon of pampering while the kids had extra energy to spend at nearby Lake Monocan where they enjoyed some water activities. The spa is a full service facility that includes a sauna, relaxation rooms (with tea and snacks) and it also offers treatments for teenagers. It is also attached to an indoor pool area. The technicians are first-class and were just what the doctor had ordered.
Wintergreen Resort is the perfect year-round getaway for anyone for any reason. There is over 40,000 sq ft of indoor and outdoor function space and every type of event. It is worth the short drive just to enjoy the natural surroundings. For winter travelers, we’re told that the ski runs boast some of the best powder in the region. Of course, we may make another trip back to Wintergreen to see for ourselves.
