Bali, the once-preferred holiday destination in Australia, was recently blacklisted on Fodor’s “No-Go List” for 2020. Instead, the world travel guide suggests travelers visit Brisbane.

While it’s not a scarlet letter to be on the No Go list, it’s a way for travelers to know what is and isn’t the hot place to be. The reality is that Bali has had some issues that have landed it on the No-Go list.

Why is that? It’s become too popular – a place travelers like to go. Last year, it suffered from over-tourism effects, with larger and larger numbers of people coming to vacation there. To help, the travel guide said, the government is considering the implementation of a tourist tax to lessen the deleterious environmental effects.

According to the Bali Environmental Agency, the island generated around 3,800 tons of waste daily, with 60 percent of it going into landfills. It was a noticeable problem.

Along with the negative impacts on the environment, officials are getting tougher on tourists they consider disrespectful:

  • People wearing bathing suits to visit religious places
  • People who climb over sacred sites
  • People who disrespect the country’s cultural norms and customs

Bali wasn’t the only place on Fodor’s 2020 No Go list. Other locations the travel guide suggested people steer clear of include:

  • Angkor Wat (Cambodia)
  • Barcelona
  • Big Sur (California)
  • Hanoi Train Street (Vietnam)
  • Matterhorn
  • National Marine Sanctuary (Florida Keys)
  • Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel (Mexico)

The places were listed as no-go for three key reasons – political, environmental and ethical.

The travel guide also made mention of two places looking to implement hefty tourist taxes – Indonesia’s Komodo Island and Ecuador’s Galapagos National Park.

The guide did mention more than 50 places to check out, such as Athens, Queens (New York City), Spain’s Andalusia region and Faroe Islands. The go-to list provided locations of all types that fit into any budget.
