New York is not known for being a cheap location to live in. The truth is that the cost of living there is relatively high. However, that shouldn’t dissuade you from visiting New York

If you’re on a tight budget, keep in mind that a trip to New York doesn’t have to break the bank. There are several ways you can keep your trip within your budget. New York has a spectacular cityscape and many beautiful historical sites, parks, and other attractions worth seeing.

Below are some tips to consider when planning your trip.

1. Use The Subway

There are many ways to get around New York. You could take a cab, bus, or ridesharing services. But the cheapest way to get around is the subway. There are many routes covered by the subway. Consider doing some research to know more about the routes covered.

The subway system in New York is reliable and easy to use. It’s natural for first-time subway riders to be concerned about their safety. But you don’t have to worry as it’s a secure mode of transportation. It’s probably safer than any other kind of transportation you could think of.  Regardless of how many places you wish to visit, the subway is your most economical option for traveling between locations close or far apart.

However, if you’re coming all the way from Washington, the DC to New York train is a practical choice as it’s convenient and comfortable.

2. Affordable Accommodation

If you’re on a shoestring budget, staying in a hostel rather than a hotel throughout your visit is usually advisable. Fortunately, there are plenty of vacation dwellings you can choose from.

Moreover, note that some areas in New York, such as Brooklyn and Queens, have more affordable accommodation as opposed to, say, Manhattan. If you’re traveling as a family, you can rent an entire house. However, if you’re traveling alone, you could rent a room for a considerably lower price.

3. Eat Local

Eating at hole-in-the-wall restaurants is a terrific way to keep your budget in check while in New York. The local food scene is rather vibrant, and your trip would be incomplete if you didn’t try their staple foods.

There are numerous restaurants, food trucks, and breakfast carts serving a variety of cuisines. You can have your fill of popular and reasonably priced food items, such as pizza, hot dogs, and bagels. Ask some locals for recommendations for the best spots in town.

4. Bike Or Walk Between Activities

If you’re traveling short distances, walking or using a bike to move from point A to point B is much better. New York is easy to navigate. For example, places like Manhattan are designed as a grid, making it a cinch to find your way around even if you’re bad at directions.

Rental bikes or bike share services are almost everywhere in New York if you wish to ride a bike.

5. Consider Winter Travel

If you want to save money on your trip to New York, you should consider going in the winter. Summer is the busiest travel season. In the winter, you’re more likely to find cheaper plane tickets and hotel accommodation. It makes traveling during the off-season significantly less expensive.

In general, people do not travel during the cold season. But that doesn’t make New York any less appealing in the wintertime. Even though it’s winter, there are lots of things to do, such as ice skating, window shopping, going to concerts, and experiencing holiday traditions.

6. Visit City Parks

You can visit one of New York‘s many parks. Central Park is one of the most well-known parks in the New York area. There are, however, other parks worth considering. Prospect Park and Riverside Park are two examples.

New York‘s parks have distinct features and sceneries that make them enjoyable to wander around and explore. Furthermore, going to a park is usually free of charge. All the more reason why you should visit at least one of the parks in New York.

7. Museum Deals

People come to New York for a variety of reasons. But if you want to explore the city, you should visit at least one of New York’s museums. Some opulent museums with rich histories and impressive art collections are scattered around New York.

However, visiting a museum isn’t as expensive as you might think. Some museums provide free admission days, while others may have pay-what-you-wish days. So, don’t forget to do some research to find discounts if you want to check out the museums in New York.

8. Visit Historical Sites

New York City is a must-visit for history buffs as it’s home to many historical sites and landmarks that you can explore, such as the Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and Times Square, to name a few. And you don’t need to pay anything to see these public areas.

Planning a trip to New York on a tight budget is possible, but you must make sure that your preparations are thorough. Therefore, if you want your trip to be successful, you should start planning everything as soon as possible. The points mentioned above can be a handy reference for you. You may seek a local guide to help you arrange your vacation and have an authentic experience of the Big Apple.
