New Orleans has an unparalleled tradition of comfort cuisine and infectious music. It’s also a big-time art town that overflows with culture. Arguably the Caribbean’s northernmost outpost, the homeland of funk and soul music has long been one of the world’s most celebrated cities. From the bustling French Quarter to pastoral Audubon Park, this storied destination provides every angle of having a good time. There are also a few really cool places to stay, too.

Mountains are where heaven high-fives the earth. Indonesia is a diverse destination with 17,000 islands, including Sumatra, the world’s sixth-largest island.  West Sumatra, on the Indian Ocean, is often overlooked by most international travelers.  However, Indonesians have long been drawn to this province’s much cooler mountainous highlands, particularly its centerpiece, Bukittinggi.

Having previously experienced Indonesia via a 1988 backpacking romp through Bali’s early-stage wildness and a 1998 trek across tribal Irian Jaya, I knew of Indonesia’s diversity with its incredible 17,000 islands. Sumatra, the world’s sixth-largest island, eluded me until I landed in West Sumatra, a region overlooked by most travelers, to experience its priority of preserving and celebrating nature. Although I surely hit plenty of hotspots, highlights included observing and partaking in the daily life of West Sumatrans on its tropical Indian Ocean coastline, remote islands, and up in its much cooler highlands.

I adore the prairies of America’s Great Plains and especially Nebraska’s version. I’ve crisscrossed this Wyoming-bordering state a few times and recently returned to focus on its two largest cities—Omaha and Lincoln—and a few traveler-worthy gems that lie between them. Omaha, Warren Buffet’s hometown, has been hosting the annual 10-day college baseball world series since the 1950s. The city, rich in research hospitals, is also a dining and merriment hotspot.

Mexico is comprised of 31 states. One of them, Oaxaca, is known for its indigenous culture and its enormous impact on Mexican cuisine and culture. Quintana Roo, another state on the Yucatán Peninsula, boasts a 206-acre Caribbean-seaside resort, the jungle-surrounded Grand Velas Riviera Maya, which celebrates all of Mexico’s charms with the luxury-VIP vibe turned all the way up.
