In honor of America’s veterans, World Footprints is proud to share an inspiring conversation with Dr. Betty Moseley Brown, one of the first women of color to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps during the 1970s — a time when both race and gender barriers stood tall.
The U.S. Marine Corps has long been recognized as one of the world’s most elite and demanding military forces. But what would compel a young Black woman in the segregated South to volunteer for boot camp below the Mason-Dixon Line — knowing the physical and psychological challenges that lay ahead?
“Marines are built through the ethos of struggle and sacrifice.”
–Gen. James Jones
A Trailblazer in Uniform
Dr. Moseley Brown shares the story behind her decision to enlist and the strength she drew from her mother, a proud Army veteran who modeled resilience and service. Together, they represent a legacy of Black women who answered the call to serve when few others looked like them.
Her Marine Corps journey, which began amid social upheaval and limited opportunities for women of color, evolved into a distinguished military and civilian career. Today, Dr. Moseley Brown serves as Division Chief of Federal Advisory Committees within the Veterans Experience Office at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, shaping how the nation listens to and supports its veterans.
She’s also an author — her book, Leadership Lessons: Personal Reflections from a Woman Marine, offers deeply personal insights on leadership, discipline, and the courage to command respect in spaces where women were once invisible.
From Service to Self-Discovery
Because every World Footprints story explores the world through both purpose and place, we turned our conversation toward travel — one of Dr. Moseley Brown’s lifelong passions. She speaks candidly about the ways travel continues to transform her perspective and spirit, revealing lessons that mirror her Marine training: adaptability, humility, and connection.
And wait until you hear where she dreams of going next — and who she’d love to sit beside on a long-haul flight. Her answer is touching, unexpected, and pure testament to the kind of compassion that defines her journey.
