Aired on June 12, 2026
Franklin, Tennessee is often celebrated for its Civil War battlefield, historic downtown, and role on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail. But beneath those familiar narratives lies a richer and more complete story—one that is reshaping how visitors experience this historic Southern destination.
In this episode of World Footprints, we travel to Franklin, Tennessee to explore “The Fuller Story,” an initiative that expands the city’s historical narrative beyond Civil War battlefields and whiskey distilleries. Our guest, Matthew Maxey, Associate Director of Public Relations at Visit Franklin, shares how the destination is uncovering and elevating stories that have long been overlooked, including the experiences and contributions of African Americans, formerly enslaved people, United States Colored Troops, women, and other community members who helped shape Franklin’s identity.

A Historic Tennessee Town With a More Complete Story to Tell
Founded in 1799, Franklin has long been recognized for its role in the Civil War, particularly the Battle of Franklin, one of the war’s most significant engagements. Yet local leaders and historians have increasingly worked to present a more complete view of the city’s past through historical markers, heritage sites, educational programs, and public art that acknowledge both difficult and inspiring chapters of Franklin’s history.

That effort has culminated in The Fuller Story, a community initiative designed to broaden public understanding of Franklin’s past by highlighting stories that have often received less attention in traditional historical narratives. Rather than focusing solely on military history, the initiative explores the lives and experiences of the people who built, shaped, and sustained the community across generations.
In this episode, Matthew Maxey discusses how Franklin is embracing a more inclusive approach to storytelling—one that recognizes the contributions of African Americans, formerly enslaved individuals, educators, business owners, faith leaders, and other residents whose experiences helped define the city. Through interpretive markers, historic sites, tours, and community partnerships, visitors are discovering a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Franklin’s evolution.
