Georgia Museums

1. Atlanta History Center – Atlanta, Georgia

The Atlanta History Center presents a Cyclorama, full-size immersive exhibits, historic homes, gardens, and Civil War artifacts.

What I liked best:  The depth of historical documentation.

2. BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir – Atlanta, Georgia

The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a Hindu temple known for its intricate Italian marble architecture, detailed carvings, and serene atmosphere.

What I liked best: Observing a ceremony and participating in the water ritual.

 

3. Center for Puppetry Arts – Atlanta, Georgia

The Center for Puppetry Arts is a museum dedicated to all forms of puppetry, it features puppets from around the world and a tribute to Jim Henson’s legacy. It offers performances, interactive exhibits, and a behind-the-scenes view of puppetry magic.

What I liked best:  Learning about Jim Henson and how the performance mechanics happened.

4. Allman Brothers Museum – Macon, Georgia

This shrine in the Allman Brothers Band’s former home, The Big House, offers two floors of memorabilia, instruments, and stories detailing the band’s influential music history.

What I liked best: I spoke to Gilbert Lee, one of the Allman Brothers photographers hanging out at the museum, about how he created the purple velvet suit photograph.

 

5. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park – Macon, Georgia

Ocmulgee Mounds is a sacred Native American site featuring temple mounds, earth lodges, and archeological discoveries. This park preserves Indigenous culture and offers insights into ancient civilizations who once called Georgia home.

What I liked best: the preservation of the mounds and the educational center.

 

6. Magnolia Plantation & Gardens – Charleston, South Carolina

The Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, a historic public garden in Charleston, offers romantic landscapes, a historic house, and the stories of enslaved people, providing a nuanced view of Southern plantation life.

What I liked best:  Seeing the stunning gardens in bloom and the house tour. The house wasn’t opulent–simply serviceable and welcoming.

7. Savannah History Museum – Savannah, Georgia

Located in a historic train station, the Savannah History Museum features timelines, artifacts, and interactive displays that tell the story of Georgia’s oldest city from colonial days to the Civil War.

What I liked best:  The Forrest Gump Bench

8. Tybee Island Lighthouse Museum – Savannah, Georgia

The Tybee Island Light Station complex features the lighthouse, the light keeper’s house, and maritime navigation exhibits.

What I liked best: The well-kept grounds and buildings with authentic and educational displays.

9. Wormsloe State Historic Site – Savannah, Georgia

Wormsloe State Historic Site, with its iconic avenue of live oaks and tabby ruins, offers a glimpse into colonial life through nature trails and historical remnants.

What I liked best: The iconic live oak tree-lined roads.

North Carolina Museums

10. Blowing Rock Art & History Museum (BRAHM) – Blowing Rock, North Carolina

BRAHM in the Blue Ridge Mountains celebrates Appalachian art, culture, and history with diverse exhibitions in a welcoming space.

What I liked best:  The bronze statue of Elliott Daingerfield, a renowned local painter, on the front lawn.

 

11. Bodie Island Lighthouse – Outer Banks, North Carolina

The black-and-white Bodie Island Lighthouse, located in coastal marshes and part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, is a popular scenic stop for photographers.

What I liked best:  The striking contrast of the local scene.

12. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse – Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks’ iconic brick Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest in North America. In 1999, the lighthouse house was relocated 2,900 feet due to island erosion. The lighthouse is closed for repairs, and all the paint has been removed.

What I liked best:  Seeing this iconic lighthouse, even though scaffolding encased it.

 

13. Wright Brothers National Memorial – Kill Devil Hill, North Carolina

The Wright Brothers National Memorial marks the birthplace of flight. Visitors can see full-scale models, historic markers, and exhibits about Orville and Wilbur Wright’s pioneering aviation achievements.

What I liked best:  Learning about the Wright Brothers and their determination to continue their work and never give up.

14. Roanoke Island Marshes Lighthouse – Manteo, North Carolina

Manteo’s historic Roanoke Island Marshes Lighthouse features a quiet harbor and a scenic boardwalk. During our visit, it was closed for maintenance.

What I liked best:  Adding another lighthouse to my collection.

15. British Cemetery & Ceremony – Ocracoke, North Carolina

The British Cemetery is a solemn memorial in Ocracoke that honors British sailors who died off North Carolina’s coast during WWII.

What I liked best: The annual ceremony to honor the sailors. Navy representatives from England, Germany, the U.S., military veterans, and Coast Guard Bagpipers.

16. Ocracoke Lighthouse – Ocracoke, North Carolina

The Ocracoke Lighthouse, a beloved and still-operating Outer Banks landmark, is one of the country’s oldest lighthouses, known for its simple, classic beauty.

What I liked best:  The NPS guides that answered questions and shared all the information about the lighthouse and Ocracoke Island.

17. Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum – Ocracoke, North Carolina

The Ocracoke Preservation Society museum, housed in a historic home, preserves island history through exhibits, artifacts, and oral accounts, emphasizing maritime traditions and community stories.

What I liked best:  The history about the wild ponies and Blackbeard, the Pirate.

18. Heights House Hotel – Raleigh, North Carolina

This Raleigh boutique hotel, Heights House Hotel occupies an elegant 1850s Italianate mansion. Its period decor, restored details, and museum-quality furnishings offer a stylish experience of Southern history and hospitality. Be sure to visit the Parlor at Heights House Hotel.

What I liked best:  The welcome we received, the personal tour, and the Dirty Dill Martinis–all unmatched.

19. North Carolina Museum of Art – Raleigh, North Carolina

Raleigh’s NCMA cultural gem offers global and modern art, rotating exhibitions, a sculpture park, and free admission.

What I liked best:  The broad range of art represented.

20. North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences – Raleigh, North Carolina

The NC Museum of Natural Sciences is a top family-friendly attraction exploring the natural world from dinosaur fossils to deep-sea creatures, land flora, and fauna.

What I liked best:  The tour, discovering how important this facility is in educating the public, university students, and archeologists, and experiencing the new dinosaur exhibit, Dueling Dinosaurs.

21. Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station – North Carolina

Hatteras Island’s historic Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station showcases surfmen’s heroic rescues of shipwrecked sailors off the dangerous coast through authentic buildings and artifacts.

What I liked best:  Realizing how important these heroes were because of all the shipwrecks along the coast.

South Carolina Museums

22. Aiken County Historical Museum – Aiken, South Carolina

Housed in a historic mansion, the Aiken County Historical Museum showcases the city’s history through period rooms and changing exhibits, including equestrian heritage and Civil War stories.

What I liked best:  Learning local history.

23. Wilcox Inn Museum Collection – Aiken, South Carolina

This collection, part of the historic Willcox Hotel, offers an intimate museum experience with antique furnishings and period details reflecting Southern hospitality within a grand, working inn.

What I liked best:  The period furnishings throughout the property, meeting the owner, and dining in the on-site restaurant.

24. The Charleston Museum – Charleston, South Carolina

The Charleston Museum, America’s first, showcases Lowcountry history through exhibits on natural science, decorative arts, slavery, and seafaring. It provides a comprehensive view of Charleston’s past and present, making it a must-visit for every new visitor.

What I liked best:  This must-see introduction to Charleston.

Final Thoughts
